About the role
About Us
At Cloudflare, we are on a mission to help build a better Internet. Today the company runs one of the world’s largest networks that powers millions of websites and other Internet properties for customers ranging from individual bloggers to SMBs to Fortune 500 companies. Cloudflare protects and accelerates any Internet application online without adding hardware, installing software, or changing a line of code. Internet properties powered by Cloudflare all have web traffic routed through its intelligent global network, which gets smarter with every request. As a result, they see significant improvement in performance and a decrease in spam and other attacks. Cloudflare was named to Entrepreneur Magazine’s Top Company Cultures list and ranked among the World’s Most Innovative Companies by Fast Company.
At Cloudflare, we’re not looking for people who wait for a polished roadmap; we’re looking for the builders who see the cracks in the Internet that everyone else has simply learned to live with. We value candidates who have the instinct to spot a "normalized" problem and the AI-native curiosity to create a solution using the latest tools. Our culture is built on iteration, leveraging AI to ship faster today to make it better tomorrow, while ensuring that every improvement, no matter how small, is shared across the team to lift everyone up. If you’re the type of person who values curiosity over bureaucracy, and that AI is a partner in solving tough problems to keep the Internet moving forward, you’ll fit right in.

About the Role
Cloudflare's IT Asset Management (ITAM) team is building the future of how Cloudflare runs itself — and we're doing it on Cloudflare. We are rearchitecting our internal IT operations off third-party tools and onto Cloudflare's own platform: Workers, Durable Objects, D1, AI Gateway, and the broader stack. The goal is to replace what we buy with what we build, prove that Cloudflare is its own best customer, and create a model for how internal IT platforms should work.
As the Senior IT Systems Engineer on the IT Platform & Automation pillar, you are the architect of that future. You will own the design and build of Cloudflare-native systems that replace today's third-party tooling — starting with MCP servers that connect our IT workflows to Cloudflare OS, and expanding to full application refactors that bring asset management, software inventory, and operational automation onto the platform natively.
You should understand how today's systems work — not because maintaining them is the job, but because you need to know what you're replacing and why. The job is to build what comes next.
This is a high-ownership, high-autonomy IC role. You will operate with significant independence, define your own technical approach, and serve as the engineering bar-setter for the pillar.
What You'll Do
- Architect and build Cloudflare-native replacements for ITAM's current third-party tooling — own the full technical design from first principles.
- Build and own ITAM's internal MCP servers: the integration layer that connects IT systems, data sources, and workflows to Cloudflare OS and AI-powered tooling.
- Refactor existing IT operational workflows onto Cloudflare's platform — Workers, Durable Objects, D1, AI Gateway, Queues, and related primitives.
- Build AI agents and AI-powered automation that make IT operations faster, more accurate, and less manual — wired natively into the platform you're building.
- Define the data architecture for ITAM's future platform: clean ownership models, reliable source-of-truth design, and integrations that don't require third-party middleware.
- Lead build-vs-buy decisions with a clear bias toward building on Cloudflare where it makes sense — and retiring third-party tools when the Cloudflare-native version is ready.
- Partner with the Software Asset Management (SAM) pillar to understand their operational requirements and build the platform they'll run on.
- Set engineering standards for the pillar: architecture, code quality, documentation, and how decisions get made and recorded.
- Mentor junior and mid-level engineers on the pillar; raise the bar through design reviews and direct technical coaching.
- Own the security, compliance, and data governance posture of the systems you build.
What We're Looking For
- Strong coding ability in TypeScript, Go, Rust, or Bash — you ship working software end to end.
- Excellent systems design instincts: you think in ownership boundaries, data flows, failure modes, and long-term maintainability.
- Deep experience designing and building distributed systems, internal platforms, or greenfield application architecture.
- Experience with modern cloud-native development; Cloudflare Workers, Durable Objects, D1, or similar edge/serverless platforms strongly preferred.
- Comfort working from a blank page — you define the approach, break down the complexity, and drive it all the way to done.
- Experience building LLM-based tooling in production: agents, MCP servers, context engineering, or AI-assisted workflows.
- A builder's mindset toward legacy systems: understand them well enough to replace them cleanly, not maintain them indefinitely.
- Strong communicator — able to translate complex technical architecture into clear decisions for non-technical stakeholders.
- Self-directed and high-ownership: you own projects from roadmap through delivery and ongoing operation.
- Based in Austin, TX (hybrid — expected to be onsite regularly).
Nice to Have
- Prior experience on a platform engineering, developer productivity, or internal tools team.
- Experience building or operating MCP servers or context-engineering infrastructure at scale.
- Contributions to open-source developer tooling or AI projects.
- Familiarity with IT asset management, SaaS management, or internal operations domains — not to maintain existing tools, but to understand the problem space you're rebuilding.
- Experience with CI/CD systems and build tooling.
What Makes Cloudflare Special?
We’re not just a highly ambitious, large-scale technology company. We’re a highly ambitious, large-scale technology company with a soul. Fundamental to our mission to help build a better Internet is protecting the free and open Internet.
Project Galileo: Since 2014, we've equipped more than 2,400 journalism and civil society organizations in 111 countries with powerful tools to defend themselves against attacks that would otherwise censor their work, technology already used by Cloudflare’s enterprise customers--at no cost.
Athenian Project: In 2017, we created the Athenian Project to ensure that state and local governments have the highest level of protection and reliability for free, so that their constituents have access to election information and voter registration. Since the project, we've provided services to more than 425 local government election websites in 33 states.
1.1.1.1: We released 1.1.1.1 to help fix the foundation of the Internet by building a faster, more secure and privacy-centric public DNS resolver. This is available publicly for everyone to use - it is the first consumer-focused service Cloudflare has ever released. Here’s the deal - we don’t store client IP addresses never, ever. We will continue to abide by our privacy commitment and ensure that no user data is sold to advertisers or used to target consumers.
Sound like something you’d like to be a part of? We’d love to hear from you!
