Software Development Manager, EC2 Control Plane, EC2 S4
Amazon Development Center U.S., Inc. · Arlington, United States · Software Development
About the role
Key job responsibilities
Lead a team of software engineers building and operating DNS, network proxy, and dependency-validation services that support all of EC2, including hiring, coaching, and growing team members.
Provide technical direction on system design decisions involving networking protocols, Rust, Java, and HTTP-based multi-tier services, ensuring reliability and performance at scale.
Translate complex functional and technical requirements into detailed plans and development strategies, managing day-to-day execution while keeping the team aligned to a long-term roadmap.
Drive operational excellence across the DevOps lifecycle—design, automation, monitoring, and testing—raising the bar for service availability and security.
Partner with senior leadership and product and program management teams to prioritize work, resolve competing demands, and deliver results that keep pace with EC2's growth.
A day in the life
You might start by reviewing DNS query-latency dashboards and proxy error rates, then join a design discussion where your team is evaluating a Rust-based component to replace a legacy Java service. After a 1:1 focused on an engineer's development plan, you meet with partner teams to align on an upcoming dependency-validation rollout. Between operational reviews and strategic planning sessions, you ensure your engineers have clear priorities and the support they need to ship reliable infrastructure.
