Are you a strategic tax professional who's energized by complex business challenges? Equally at home in direct and indirect tax or strong in one or the other with the curiosity and drive to learn the other? Are you looking for meaningful, genuinely interesting tax work within a team that prizes technical excellence alongside practicality, strong judgment, and good instincts? Join our Canada Tax Planning team and help pioneer creative solutions to novel tax problems that span the full spectrum of Canadian tax, from GST/HST to corporate income tax and cross-border structuring.

Key job responsibilities
- Develop comprehensive direct and indirect tax planning strategies for new Amazon product launches and business features across multiple operational domains
- Research complex Canadian issues across the board — GST/HST, PST/QST, and direct tax, including inbound and outbound cross-border matters.

- Lead and contribute to Amazon's Canada direct and indirect tax planning initiatives

- Draft tax opinions, technical memos, and documentation to support positions and our ongoing reporting, compliance, and controversy analysis

- Collaborate cross-functionally with legal, public policy, accounting, and business partner teams to keep operations tax-efficient and compliant

- Manage engagements with outside tax counsel and advisors
- Track planning and policy trends in Canada and globally, analyze relevant legislative changes, and identify opportunities to advocate for policy change with governments and tax authorities

A day in the life
You'll be a manager on our Canada Tax Planning team, reporting directly to the Head of Canadian Indirect Tax. Your day will be far from ordinary. Our technologies change the way people find, discover, and buy products, services, and entertainment. You'll collaborate with teams across Amazon's diverse ecosystem — digital services, logistics, media, and more — and move fluidly between direct and indirect tax questions as easily as the business moves between projects. You'll dive into intricate planning scenarios, craft solutions that balance compliance with growth, and bring your expertise to bear on strategic initiatives. As a trusted partner to the business, our work is intellectually challenging, fast-paced, and, honestly, a lot of fun.

About the team
We're a collaborative, forward-thinking group of tax professionals supporting Amazon's expansive Canadian operations across both direct and indirect tax. We build meaningful relationships with our business partners and other key stakeholders, and we help them find novel, creative solutions to complex challenges. Beyond high-quality technical advice, we help our partners see around corners — thinking through the long-term implications of decisions — and we move quickly by laying out practical options for going forward. We support building cross-functional expertise by investing in structured training and peer learning, so people grow into truly versatile tax professionals. Our team thrives on intellectual curiosity and strategic thinking. We value both independent work and team collaboration, we're effective at tactical execution, and we adapt quickly to change. We also laugh together, a lot.

Basic qualifications

- 4+ years of tax, finance or a related analytical field experience
- Experience working in a large public accounting firm or multi-national corporate tax department

Preferred qualifications

- You love finding creative, technically sound solutions to complex problems, and you pivot easily between different types of work and tax rules — direct one hour, indirect the next
- You've spent 5+ years advising on complex Canadian tax planning across a range of industries, and you're comfortable on both sides of the house — direct and indirect — with practical familiarity with both the Income Tax Act and the Excise Tax Act
- You bring a strong technical foundation — a CPA, a law degree, or a graduate degree in taxation, ideally with either the GST/HST or Income Tax In-Depth Program under your belt
- You hold yourself to high standards, deliver work that needs little revision, and need little direction to run with a task
- You cut through documents and discussions to the key flows and the big picture fast, and you can explain complex tax concepts — in writing and out loud — in ways that actually land with non-tax partners
- You're organized with excellent research and analytical skills, but you know when to ask for help if you've hit a roadblock
