An overview of this role

As a Senior Engineering Manager, Continuous Deployment at GitLab, you'll build and manage a globally distributed team focused on Continuous Deployment capabilities within GitLab's artificial intelligence-powered DevSecOps platform. You'll hire engineers, shape how the team works, and guide delivery of a reliable product experience for customers.

Your team will build a Continuous Deployment engine that goes beyond script execution. It will reconcile live state, coordinate durable workflows, and support artificial intelligence-native governance. You'll align technical direction with customer needs and business goals. Your work will help customers deploy software with greater reliability, safety, and assurance in a remote, asynchronous environment.

What you’ll do

  • Build and manage a globally distributed engineering team, creating an environment where team members can do their best work and grow their careers.
  • Hire, onboard, and develop engineers, setting clear expectations for quality and accountability.
  • Partner with product management and cross-functional engineering teams to shape the roadmap, make sound architectural decisions, and deliver against product commitments.
  • Set expectations for reliable, secure, maintainable, and performant delivery, and help the team meet them.
  • Encourage the use of artificial intelligence as a core part of how the team works, with engineers using artificial intelligence tools in their daily workflows to improve efficiency and innovation.
  • Hold regular 1:1s, provide continuous feedback, and support engineers' professional growth through coaching and skill development.
  • Track milestone progress, identify blockers early, and address patterns before they require escalation.
  • Participate in the incident management on-call rotation to help maintain availability targets for GitLab.com.

What you’ll bring

  • Experience managing engineering team, including advising on architecture and contributing to technical discussions.
  • Experience with distributed systems and durable workflow execution, including state persistence and replay patterns.
  • Experience building or managing teams working on release orchestration, deployment automation, or continuous delivery at scale.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes deployment patterns and GitOps workflows, including progressive delivery strategies such as blue/green and canary deployments.
  • Experience with policy-based governance and event-driven architectures in reliable, enterprise-grade delivery systems.
  • Experience building and managing teams in early-stage contexts, including defining processes, hiring foundational team members, and establishing how the team works.
  • Experience working across functions, exercising judgment, and moving work forward in ambiguous or fast-changing situations.
  • Experience communicating clearly in writing and conversation while working effectively in a remote-first, asynchronous environment.

The Senior Engineering Manager, Continuous Deployment role is part of GitLab's broader DevOps engineering organization, working on software delivery experiences that help customers ship with assurance. We solve complex deployment challenges in a way that fits GitLab's single-platform approach, with close coordination across product, engineering, and infrastructure. This work brings together platform architecture, delivery reliability, and GitLab's evolving artificial intelligence strategy in a highly visible product area. We work in an all-remote, handbook-first environment and practice transparency, teamwork, and iteration.
