Principal Software Engineer, Enterprise Productivity

Amazon Development Centre Ireland Limited · Dublin, Ireland · Software Development

Full-timePrincipal

About the role

We are looking for a Principal Software Development Engineer to lead our Enterprise Productivity organization's transformation to AI-native software development — redefining how 50+ services serving over a million employees are designed, built, tested, deployed, and maintained.

Enterprise Productivity powers how every employee at one of the world's largest technology companies creates, communicates, collaborates, and operates — from messaging and collaboration platforms serving hundreds of thousands of monthly active users, to email infrastructure protecting billions of messages annually, to content platforms hosting billions of documents, to SaaS governance spanning dozens of enterprise applications. Our engineers are already AI-augmented, yet end-to-end delivery velocity hasn't kept pace — because the lifecycle surrounding code (planning, specification, review, release, operations) remains traditionally bound. You will close this gap.

What You'll Do
You will solve four principal-level challenges that no single team can address alone:

1. AI Agent Governance at Enterprise Scale
2. Vendor API Reliability & Observability
3. Email Infrastructure Modernization
4. AI-Native SDLC Transformation

You will operate as 50% hands-on builder and 50% influencer — shipping production-grade systems while leading cross-team design reviews and mentoring senior engineers toward AI-native proficiency. Based in Dublin, you will be the principal technical leader for our largest engineering hub outside the US, architecting first-party services as reusable platform capabilities and establishing the technical framework to transform third-party vendor integrations.

Key job responsibilities
* Architect and deliver the AI-native SDLC framework — defining how existing services transform and new services are built AI-native from inception
* Design cross-cutting AI governance architecture enabling governed, auditable agent-to-service interactions at enterprise scale
* Lead email security re-architecture from legacy to AI-native threat detection at billion-message scale
* Build reusable AI primitives and reference implementations that compound across 50+ services
* Design vendor reliability patterns (predictive health, circuit breakers, auto-adaptation) and the technical framework for transforming third-party services
* Lead cross-pillar design reviews, raising the architectural bar across multiple engineering teams
* Mentor senior engineers toward AI-native proficiency, growing organizational capacity independently
* Represent the Dublin engineering hub in organization-wide technical decisions

About the team
Enterprise Productivity owns 50+ services powering how over a million employees create, communicate, collaborate, and operate every day. Our portfolio spans messaging and collaboration platforms, meeting and voice infrastructure, email security protecting billions of messages annually, content management hosting billions of documents, SaaS governance, and AI governance infrastructure enabling safe agent-to-service interactions at enterprise scale. We are transforming into an AI-first product team — our vision: "You make the decisions. Our tools do the rest." Our Dublin engineering hub is central to this transformation, with teams here owning critical services across the full portfolio.

Basic qualifications

* Software development experience with architecting and delivering large-scale distributed systems serving millions of users
* Experience leading technical strategy and driving architectural decisions across multiple engineering teams without direct authority
* Experience designing and implementing AI/ML-powered systems, automation frameworks, or intelligent operational tooling in production environments
* Experience defining and driving adoption of software development methodologies, frameworks, or platform capabilities across an engineering organization

Preferred qualifications

* Experience transforming software development lifecycles to incorporate AI-native practices (spec-driven development, AI-assisted code generation, automated testing from specifications, intelligent CI/CD)
* Experience building autonomous operations capabilities including self-healing systems, predictive maintenance, or AI-powered incident response
* Experience with AI agent orchestration, MCP integrations, or LLM-powered automation at enterprise scale
* Experience operating across diverse technology portfolios spanning both first-party services and third-party SaaS platform integrations
* Track record of establishing technical communities of practice, mentoring senior engineers, and raising the engineering bar across organizations
* Experience working in or with enterprise productivity, collaboration, or communication platforms at scale
