System Development Engineer , Amazon Leo

Amazon Kuiper Manufacturing Enterprises LLC · Washington, DC · System Development Engineering

Full-time

About the role

Amazon Leo is Amazon’s low Earth orbit satellite network. Our mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet connectivity to customers beyond the reach of existing networks. From individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, and government agencies, Amazon Leo will serve people and organizations operating in locations without reliable connectivity.

We're looking for a Systems Engineer to operate and improve the OTA rollout process that delivers software updates to millions of Customer Terminals in the field. You'll be hands-on with every release — preparing rollout plans, monitoring deployments, triaging field issues, and ensuring CTs across all hardware variants receive the right updates safely.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in operational environments where attention to detail and methodical execution directly impact customer experience. You'll develop deep expertise in CT fleet behavior, firmware compatibility, and large-scale deployment operations.

Export Control Requirement:
Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Key job responsibilities
What you'll do:
- Execute OTA rollouts end-to-end, preparing rollout plans, configuring device targeting and eligibility rules, staging deployments, and monitoring progress through GA
- Manage variant-aware rollout execution, ensuring each CT hardware variant and firmware branch receives compatible updates in the correct sequence
- Monitor fleet health during rollouts, tracking success/failure rates, device telemetry, and key health indicators, and escalating anomalies per established runbooks
- Triage deployment failures and stalled updates, diagnosing root causes (connectivity issues, firmware incompatibilities, crash loops) and coordinating resolution with firmware and operations teams
- Maintain and improve rollout runbooks, SOPs, checklists, and go/no-go decision criteria
- Manage fleet segmentation, maintaining canary groups, beta rings, and hold-back cohorts, and updating cohort definitions as the fleet evolves
- Build and maintain operational dashboards and reports for rollout status, fleet coverage, and update adoption metrics
- Automate repetitive operational tasks, scripting rollout preparation, health checks, and reporting to reduce manual toil and human error
- Participate in on-call rotation for OTA operations and contribute to post-incident reviews

Basic qualifications

- Experience in automating, deploying, and supporting large-scale infrastructure
- Experience programming with at least one modern language such as Python, Ruby, Golang, Java, C++, C#, Rust
- Experience with Linux/Unix
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines build processes

Preferred qualifications

- Experience with distributed systems at scale
