The Junior Penetration Tester Internship Program at EncryptEdge Labs provides aspiring penetration testers with a structured, hands-on experience that covers various aspects of ethical hacking and vulnerability assessment. Over eight weeks, interns will complete projects designed to build a solid foundation in penetration testing techniques. The curriculum spans topics such as reconnaissance, system hacking, web application security, network-level attacks, and advanced exploitation techniques.

Participants will also learn post-exploitation strategies, reporting, and remediation, culminating in a Capture The Flag (CTF) challenge that tests their acquired skills. This program is ideal for those looking to kickstart a career in offensive security.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Learn and perform penetration testing techniques and methodologies.
  • Set up and configure penetration testing labs and environments.
  • Conduct information gathering, vulnerability scanning, and network penetration testing.
  • Execute web application security testing and system hacking techniques.
  • Engage in post-exploitation tasks, report writing, and remediation strategies.
  • Participate in a Capture The Flag (CTF) challenge to demonstrate acquired skills.

Requirements

Core Qualities:
  • A strong passion for offensive security and ethical hacking.

  • Exceptional documentation skills, capable of presenting findings clearly and professionally.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective collaboration.

Educational and Learning Background:
  • A degree in Computer Science, Information Security, or related disciplines is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Evidence of self-learning through certifications, projects, or challenges in cybersecurity.

Foundational Knowledge:
  • Basic understanding of network protocols (e.g., TCP/IP, HTTP) and operating system fundamentals (Windows/Linux).
  • Familiarity with Linux command-line tools and basic cybersecurity concepts is advantageous but not required.

Certifications (Desirable):
  • TryHackMe Jr Penetration Tester Certificate.
  • eLearnSecurity Junior Penetration Tester (eJPT).
  • CompTIA Pentest+ (optional for entry-level candidates).

Recommended Courses:
  • Beginner’s Guide to Penetration Testing (TryHackMe or HackTheBox).
  • Practical Ethical Hacking by The Cyber Mentor.
  • Introduction to Web Application Security (Udemy or Pluralsight).

Key Skillset:
  • Proficiency in foundational ethical hacking techniques: reconnaissance, scanning, and exploitation.
  • Basic understanding of vulnerability scanning and writing clear, actionable reports.
  • Knowledge of legal and ethical standards in penetration testing.

Technical Tool Familiarity:
  • Hands-on experience with tools like:
    • Kali Linux, Metasploit, Nmap, and Nikto.
    • Web security platforms such as Burp Suite and OWASP ZAP.
  • Basic scripting knowledge in Python, Bash, or a similar language.

Logistics and Preparedness:
  • Access to a dedicated computer and a stable internet connection.
  • Ability to set up a secure and isolated work environment (training and support will be provided).

Preferred Experience:
  • Practical exposure to penetration testing labs, online challenges, or project-based learning.
  • Previous coursework or personal projects in ethical hacking or cybersecurity-related domains.
